What is EQ?

Just as IQ is Intelligence Quotient, EQ is Emotional Quotient.

EQ goes by many names, so you may have heard it referred to as Emotional Intelligence (EI), or in schools as Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).

EQ is an important type of intelligence, and is most often defined as: the ability to perceive, understand, use, and manage your emotions in a healthy way to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict.

Emotional intelligence is organized into four domains:

  1. Self-management
  2. Self-awareness
  3. Social awareness
  4. Relationship management

EQ skills help us in so many ways – to build meaningful relationships, make better choices, face challenges, and meet our goals.

How is EQ for kidz different from counseling?

A child psychologist or counselor observes a child’s developmental stages, determines if they are developing appropriately or not, and diagnoses any disorders. Counseling for children normally consists of talk, art or play-based therapy and may include prescribing medication.

Susanna is an emotional intelligence coach, rooted in her belief in each individual’s ability to adapt and grow if given the right tools at the right time. She focuses on the child’s unique emotional and social profile, and tailor-makes programs to meet their EQ needs. Susanna not only coaches children and parents the neuroscience and psychology behind emotions, she empowers them with practical tools and strategies they can immediately apply in their homes. Susanna does not diagnose mental disorders or administer medication, as she believes that there are natural tools to overcome emotional or social issues.

Counseling happens behind closed doors and parents might not be involved, whereas Susanna is transparent throughout the process, providing regular feedback for parents, with practical tools to implement with their families. Counseling might give results in the short term, while applied emotional intelligence skills last a lifetime.

Why is EQ important?

When it comes to happiness and success in life, EQ matters just as much as IQ, if not more!

Emotional intelligence (EQ) helps you build stronger relationships, succeed at school and work, and achieve your career and personal goals. It can also help you to connect with your feelings, turn intention into action, and make informed decisions about what matters most to you.

Emotional intelligence affects:

  • Your performance at school and work
  • Your physical health
  • Your mental health
  • Your relationships
  • Your social intelligence
Are the EQ programs done in-person or online?

Both! The entire EQ programs consists of 10 two-hour sessions, which can be done either online or in-person.

If the programs sre done online, we will use Zoom to be sure of security. If the programd are done in-person, Coach Susanna will come to your home for your convenience.

When is my child ready to learn EQ?

Emotional and social development begin as early as infancy, when children begin to self-soothe and interact with caregivers in a process called “serve-and-return”. However, as language starts to further develop around 4 years of age, it is time to start actively training young minds to further cultivate their EQ.

Children are always learning from the way those around them deal with challenges, how they cope with their emotions, and the subtle messages we give them in social interactions. It is important to get professional guidance to ensure that we are communicating the messages we want our children to receive!

Susanna works with children ages 4-12, when they are in their prime stages of emotional and social development, along with their parents.

The good news is that EQ skills can be learned and grown at any age with practice!

What is the duration of the EQ programs?

EQFP

The EQFP program consists of 7 sessions of 2 hours (not exceeding 3 months). The exact timing of the coaching sessions is up to the family's desired pacing, which can be discussed together in the consultation session. Susanna recommends one session per week.

EQCP

The short-term program consists of 5 sessions of 2 hours(not exceeding 2 months)

The long-term program consists of 10 sessions of 2 hours(not exceeding 4 months).

Susanna recommends one session per week, whihc results in a total duration 2.5 months (long-term program). However, the pacing of the program is entirely up to the family. For example, some families prefer to take a short break halfway through so that they can really use the tools and resources given and put them into practice at home!

The last 3 customized sessions are where the real magic happens, as Susanna tailor-makes the EQ topics to suit the parent and child’s unique individual needs!

However, your EQ journey with Susanna does not necessarily end with the completion of 10 sessions. At the end of the program, families may choose to continue with customized sessions or with a sibling, or even further parent coaching. At EQ for kidz, we are flexible and work with you to ensure everyone’s needs have been met.

Why are parents involved?

Parents are key to their child’s EQ development. The research clearly shows that when parents work on developing skills like empathy, communication, resilience, and know how to manage their emotions, those skills will be passed on to their children.

Susanna can coach children on the science behind their emotions and give them practical tools to use, but if parents are not re-enforcing them in the home, it simply won’t stick. This is why, from the very start, parents work together as a team with Susanna. In fact, the first session of the EQ programs is for parents only!

To achieve effective and long-lasting results, parents must play an active role, using her as their coach and reading suggested books, following scripts, and using her resources to understand how to become an “emotion coach” for their child.

High EQ Parents = High EQ Children

Can I sign up more than one of my children (siblings)?

In special cases, yes! The programs can work well for more than one child, but only if they are similar in their developmental stage and emotional awareness.

Susanna has had great success with siblings before, but will first need to discuss the specific case with the parents beforehand. Contact Susanna now to see if this option might be a good fit for your family!
